What You Should Know About PET
PET scans are noninvasive. Radioactive tracer is injected into the vein of an arm or hand by the doctor. This radionuclide will travel through your blood and collect in areas where cell activity is high. Your body will be scan and the scanner will make a map. The brightness of the images you will see during a PET scan will reflect how much radioactive material is in the body and the amount of cell activity.
For a PET scan, a patient must fast for at least four hours before the procedure. The healthcare provider can explain to you how your normal medicines may be used prior to your PET scan. If you’re pregnant, it is important that your healthcare provider knows. It’s also important to inform your healthcare provider if you take any medication. A list should be kept of any supplements or medicines that you use.

Discuss with your doctor any reactions or allergies to specific drugs.
A PET scan will see a technologist inject small amounts of radioactive material into the body. A tracer is then released into the patient’s heart. This emits positive-charged radiation. Gamma-rays are produced by positrons which cancer cells emit. Once the radioactive tracer has reached the brain, the scan will show how the body uses oxygen and sugar.
For 90 minutes, rest before you go for the PET scan. During the PET scan, you should be quiet and not speak or move. You’ll be alone during the entire process. A special table is provided for you to rest your bodies on. After moving around the ring, the scanner detects the radioactive substance’s gamma radiation. This will provide the doctor with an image of your internal structure.
After you’ve had breakfast, you will be required to wait about 60 minutes. After you have had breakfast, the technician will put you into a PET chamber. During the scan, you’ll be asked to remain still. You may be asked to adjust your posture or hold your breath during the scan. The type of examination that you are having will determine how long the testing takes. It could take anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes.
The PET scan will allow you to resume your regular activities immediately afterward. After you’ve had the test, you’ll likely have to drink a lot of fluids to flush out the tracer. Radiologists will examine the images and interpret them. Your results may also be supported by other tests. Radiologists at Mayo Clinic may perform several types of tests.
The PET scan is able to diagnose many diseases. A PET scan is able to detect any cancerous cells in the breast and lymph nodes. A PET scan will allow the patient to lead a normal, happy life. Patients generally feel no pain and the process takes only a few minutes. However, it is essential for the radiologist to know if the patient is diabetic or has a higher risk for a cancer diagnosis.
